# Roofing square calculator

Construction calculators

Check the roof area basis before you turn a takeoff into squares.

You need to compare a roofer’s takeoff or discuss quantities with the pro desk. Enter either measured sloped roof surface or horizontal roof projection with pitch. The calculator applies your waste allowance, then converts the area to roofing squares.

## Identify the area you measured

[GAF’s measurement guide](https://www.gaf.com/en-us/blog/your-home/how-to-measure-a-roofing-square-3faec381-6f6f-49ff-841f-114c59108f2a) defines one square as one hundred square feet. It describes adding the measured areas of the roof planes. It also explains why the home’s floor area leaves out roof details, overhangs, and slope.

If your takeoff already totals the sloped planes, choose surface mode. If it gives horizontal roof projection, include the overhangs being covered and choose plan mode. Record which basis you used beside the area. Do not apply pitch again to a surface total.

## Apply pitch once

In plan mode, enter inches of rise per twelve inches of horizontal run. From that rise/run convention, this tool derives the multiplier as the square root of one plus the squared rise-to-twelve ratio. Multiply horizontal area by that factor to obtain sloped area.

One plan-mode run assumes one slope. For mixed slopes, calculate each projected section separately. Add the unrounded surface areas and use that sum in surface mode before adding a shared allowance. Keep a sketch that connects each section to its area and pitch.

## Carry the allowance into the material check

For example, one thousand square feet of measured roof surface with ten percent waste becomes eleven hundred square feet, or eleven squares. That allowance is an input you choose with the roofer. A zero entry adds no material for cuts or other waste.

The main square estimate shows two decimals. A separate upward option rounds to one hundredth of a square using the unrounded result. That option is not a bundle count. [GAF identifies bundle coverage as product specific](https://www.gaf.com/en-us/blog/your-home/how-to-measure-a-roofing-square-3faec381-6f6f-49ff-841f-114c59108f2a); confirm the selected product before ordering.

## Check the inputs and results

| Input | Unit and accepted values |
| --- | --- |
| Area basis | Horizontal projection or measured roof surface |
| Area | Square feet, 0 through 1,000,000 |
| Plan-mode pitch | Inches of rise per twelve inches run, 0 through 24 |
| Waste | Percent, 0 through 100 |

Surface mode uses your measured roof area without another pitch adjustment. The upward-rounding option increases the full result to the next hundredth of a square. Check product coverage separately before ordering.

## Before you order roofing

Keep the area unit visible using [NIST’s conversion references](https://www.nist.gov/pml/special-publication-811/nist-guide-si-appendix-b-conversion-factors/nist-guide-si-appendix-b8). The plan-to-surface factor follows the [right-triangle relationships in OpenStax](https://openstax.org/books/precalculus-2e/pages/5-4-right-triangle-trigonometry); it is a geometry derivation, not a roofing specification.

Check the selected roof system against [PNNL’s asphalt-roof guidance](https://basc.pnnl.gov/resource-guides/asphalt-shingle-roofs). Carry roof-wall transitions into the separate scope using [PNNL’s flashing reference](https://basc.pnnl.gov/resource-guides/step-and-kick-out-flashing-roof-wall-intersections), rather than counting them as covered by shingle area.

Review the area basis with the [roofing sub](/trades/roofing/) and product coverage with the [roofing supplier](/suppliers/roofing/). Use the [kick-out flashing guide](/guides/kick-out-flashing/) to assign shared edges.

Confirm the dispatch process with your branch. [Builders FirstSource’s delivery page](https://www.bldr.com/services/delivery-pickup) describes its own order and delivery records; ask your supplier which records it provides.

Return to the [construction tools hub](/tools/) for the other quantity checks and printable records.

## Where Cercha fits

Use the Cercha app’s Search filters to find a roofing trade. Review portfolio photos and use Messages to discuss the roof scope. Include the area basis and pitch in the quantity conversation.

- Area basis: Horizontal roof projection, including overhangs
- Roof area (ft²): 1000
- Rise (in per 12 in horizontal run): 6
- Waste allowance (%): 0

Pitch multiplier: 1.118034; Roof surface (ft²): 1118.033989; Area with allowance (ft²): 1118.033989; Squares: 11.180340; Estimated squares: 11.18; Rounded upward to 0.01 square: 11.19

## How this is calculated

Plan multiplier = √(1 + (p ÷ 12)²). Surface multiplier = 1. Roof surface = A × multiplier. Area with allowance = roof surface × (1 + w ÷ 100). Squares = area with allowance ÷ 100.

A is the entered area in square feet, p is inches rise per 12 inches horizontal run, and w is percent. The multiplier is our Pythagorean derivation. One square is 100 ft². The upward hundredth-square increment is a display choice.

The multiplier, areas, and squares show six decimal places. The main estimate shows two. The upward option rounds to a hundredth of a square from the unrounded result.

Ordinary displays round half up: an exact halfway value rounds upward. Display rounding never changes the purchase ceiling.

Estimate only. Plan area includes overhangs and assumes one slope. For mixed slopes, sum unrounded roof surface areas before one allowance. Bundle coverage is product specific. This does not select materials or establish product eligibility.

Estimate only. No structural sizing, loads, spans, strengths, or code-compliance decisions are calculated.

Area estimate only. Plan area includes overhangs and assumes one slope. Bundle coverage and order quantities require product-specific checks.
