# Cabinet installers for builders

Residential finish trades

You need secured, aligned cabinets before countertop templating. Name who approves the layout, accepts the installation, and handles missing pieces.

## Cabinet installer layout and handoffs for builders

Hire the cabinet installer against an approved room layout and a defined installation package. Separate manufacture, delivery, installation, hardware, and site finishing in the quote. List kitchen, vanity, laundry, and other casework by room. Ask who receives the shipment and records damage or missing pieces before the install date.

For a new home, settle appliance models, fillers, end panels, and access openings before release. For a remodel, mark retained boxes, replacement fronts, and full removals separately. Ask the installer to inspect the actual walls and floor. Put any correction outside the cabinet scope back to the GC before cutting or fastening.

### Make layout decisions before templating

Use the [cabinet-layout release guide](/guides/freeze-the-cabinet-layout/) to give the cabinet installer, plumber, electrician, and appliance installer one approved revision. Ask [who can approve a field change](/guides/who-approves-extra-work/). Record any revision and circulate it before another trade works from the old plan. Treat a customer's verbal selection as a request to document, not as a finished installation instruction.

Use the [cabinets-or-flooring sequence guide](/guides/cabinets-or-flooring-first/) to agree the handoff with the [flooring sub](/trades/flooring/). Flooret directs fixed cabinets before its floating floors, while its specified glued or nailed systems allow another order. [Product-specific sequencing][flooret]

Check the actual floor product rather than applying that example to every kitchen. Agree finished elevations and appliance access together. Ask whether flooring stops at cabinet footprints or runs through an opening. Show that decision on the handoff drawing.

KraftMaid's installation guide addresses uneven walls and floors, shimming, attachment, and cabinet alignment. It also provides door and drawer adjustment instructions. [Manufacturer installation guide][kraftmaid]

Have the installer use the current instructions for the selected cabinet system. Inspect support and fastening before concealment. Ask the cabinet installer and countertop firm to record acceptance of the base run before [templating](/glossary/#countertop-template). Leave unresolved pieces or field modifications on a marked list rather than calling the room complete.

### Check the contract and approvals

In North Carolina, general contracting depends on the undertaking and contracting relationship, with a $40,000 threshold in G.S. 87-1. [Contracting definition][nc-law]

Ask the board how a cabinet firm's contract fits if it also manages a broader renovation. Request applicable license evidence, insurance documents, and comparable references. Verify coverage directly with the insurer. Confirm the actual installer, available crew, committed dates, and contact for return work.

Raleigh lists plumbing and electrical finals rather than a cosmetic cabinet inspection. [Inspection checklist][raleigh]

Coordinate affected connections with those trades and the permit holder. Keep layout acceptance, installation acceptance, and permit approval as separate records. Ask who restores disturbed walls and who signs off remaining utility access.

### Review hidden support and visible adjustments

Request progress photos of fastening, shims, and the base run before countertops. Include close views of fillers, scribed wall interfaces, end panels, and reveals between fronts. Ask for an appliance bay as well as the wide kitchen view. Caption the cabinet product and the installer's actual role.

KraftMaid's troubleshooting section connects misaligned doors and drawer fronts with adjustment or a cabinet installed out of level and square. [Adjustment and troubleshooting guidance][kraftmaid]

Use that distinction in your punch walk. Ask the installer to determine whether a hinge adjustment or a cabinet correction is needed. Mark finish damage and missing parts separately. Record who returns, what remains available from the supplier, and when the room can be released to countertops or appliances.

Put manufacturer product coverage and installation workmanship into separate terms. Ask who handles a damaged door versus a fastening problem. Keep the [dealer's order information](/suppliers/cabinets/) with the installer handoff. Avoid leaving a builder to resolve a missing part from an unlabeled photo.

### Keep closet and storage systems in their own package

Ask whether the cabinet installer also installs the selected closet or storage system. BLS lists kitchen cabinetry among carpentry tasks; that occupational description does not establish a crew's experience with your storage product. [Carpentry scope](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/construction-and-extraction/carpenters.htm)

ClosetMaid publishes different mounting instructions and identifies professionally installed storage lines. Use the instructions for the selected system. [Storage installation questions](https://homedepot.closetmaid.com/en-US/Installation/Pages/faq.aspx)

Give the installer finished wall-to-wall dimensions, door clearance, shelf layout, and the intended loading information. Ask who checks backing and anchorage before [drywall](/trades/drywall/) closes the wall. Assign measurement, ordering through the [cabinet and storage supplier](/suppliers/cabinets/), installation, and adjustments separately. Confirm the [trim](/trades/trim-carpentry/) and paint handoffs before fastening into finished surfaces.

## For cabinet installers and crews

Show the kind of cabinet package you install. Identify factory casework, custom millwork, or retained-box remodel work in your description. A builder considering an irregular kitchen needs evidence from a comparable room. Include the wall interface and attachment stages alongside the completed layout.

When approaching a builder, offer a project with your scope stated clearly. Say who performs the installation and who handles adjustment visits. Ask about order completeness, storage, approved drawings, and appliance information before confirming a start. Provide a list of decisions needed from the builder.

Before accepting work, settle receiving responsibility and the process for missing or damaged pieces. Ask who approves a filler change or revised utility opening. Record the effect on your quote and date. Keep a current drawing available for the crew rather than relying on a photo of an earlier plan.

Give the GC a list of missing pieces before the countertop firm measures. Include the agreed cabinet-readiness record. Mark remaining parts and adjustments. Offer a reference after the package and punch work are accepted, and explain exactly which crew completed the job.

## Examples from the field

*Illustrative examples, not member stories*

### Kitchen ready for templating (illustrative)

Your kitchen base run is installed, but a filler and end panel remain unresolved. Record those items with the countertop firm before releasing the template visit.

### Retained-box remodel (illustrative)

You keep the existing cabinet boxes and replace their fronts. Mark which boxes remain and who approves a changed utility opening before cutting.

### Appliance bay handoff (illustrative)

Your cabinet layout includes a selected appliance with an unfinished access opening. Review the current model information with the appliance installer and record the remaining cabinet work.

## Where Cercha fits

Portfolios and Gallery let cabinet installers show layout, attachment, and finished details. Builders can review builder endorsements and use Messages to ask who performs the installation. Search narrows the conversation by trade, ZIP code, and radius.

## Questions

### Will the cabinetmaker work directly with the builder's customer?

Agree who meets the customer and who approves selections. Have the builder record final decisions and issue the current layout to every trade.

### Does the cabinet scope include marking plumbing and electrical fixture locations?

Make layout marking an explicit line in the scope. Confirm the approved drawing with the responsible plumber and electrician before work proceeds.

### How much time should the schedule allow for the cabinet process?

Request separate dates for design approval, manufacture, delivery, installation, and missing-part returns. Confirm which stages your installer controls.

### Can another painter apply the cabinet finish?

Ask the cabinet manufacturer or maker about the specified finishing system. Record preparation, protection, and warranty responsibilities before assigning another painter.

### Can the cabinetmaker build from supplied designs rather than designing the layout?

Ask the cabinetmaker to review supplied plans and identify fabrication details or dimensions still requiring approval. Name who controls revisions.
