# Countertop fabricators and installers

Residential finish trades

You need one clear handoff from accepted cabinets to installed tops. Identify the template, fabrication, installation, and support owners before cutting.

## Countertop installer scope and template readiness

Ask the countertop installer to identify who measures, fabricates, delivers, and installs your tops. List those responsibilities even when one company supplies the package. For stone work, BLS includes countertop applications within tile and stone setting. [Occupational scope][floor-bls]

Separate stone and composite slabs from laminate, wood, or other nonstone systems in the scope. Name the actual product before asking for installation requirements. Keep [slab supply](/suppliers/countertops/), fabrication, and site installation clear in the bid. Do not compare installers as though every material uses the same support or seam detail.

For a new home, settle edges, sink and cooktop models, cutouts, seams, and overhangs before fabrication release. For a remodel, identify removal, retained cabinets, wall repair, and utility disconnects. Ask who verifies the existing support. Mark work outside the countertop contract so it receives its own owner and date.

### Release the cabinets before the template

Arrange a readiness walk with the [cabinet installer](/trades/cabinets/) and countertop firm. Request an accepted base layout, agreed support plan, and confirmed fixture information. Ask the templater to record any condition that prevents measuring. Avoid converting a scheduled appointment into acceptance of incomplete cabinetry.

Cambria's technical guideline requires support without deflection and addresses cutouts, overhangs, and supported field seams. Those requirements apply to Cambria installations. [Cambria support guidance][cambria]

Ask your fabricator for the current requirements for your chosen material and thickness. Identify who supplies and installs brackets or other support. Have the responsible designer resolve unusual conditions. Do not order an overhang from an inspiration image without checking the assembly behind it.

Approve seam placement and visible pattern arrangement before cutting. Ask for a drawing or marked material layout that identifies the approved pieces. Record who authorizes changes after [template](/glossary/#countertop-template). Keep the same sink and appliance information available for the installer and reconnecting trades.

### Check NC licensing and utility handoffs

G.S. 87-1 ties the $40,000 GC threshold to the undertaking and who contracts for it. It distinguishes work for a licensed GC from work for an unlicensed customer. Ask the board how your contract fits that definition. [NC contracting definition](https://www.ncleg.gov/enactedlegislation/statutes/html/bysection/chapter_87/gs_87-1.html)

Request applicable credentials and insurance in the contracting name. Verify coverage directly. Confirm whether the installation crew works for the fabrication firm or another business. Ask who handles access, lifting arrangements, property protection, and a return visit for damaged or unfinished work.

Raleigh requires plumbing and electrical finals for completed systems. [Final inspection stages][raleigh]

Give reconnections to the responsible qualified trades and coordinate with the permit holder. Ask the plumber to confirm sink and faucet readiness. Ask the electrician or appliance installer about cooktop access. Do not treat countertop acceptance as approval of utility work.

### Inspect seams and support together

Cambria specifies fully supported field seams and radiused cutout corners. [Installation and seam guidance][cambria]

For that system, inspect against its current instructions with the installer. For another material, request its own requirements. Put unsupported joints, damaged cutouts, deflection concerns, chips, rough edges, and mismatched appearance on the review list. Ask the installer to distinguish a cosmetic repair from a support problem before changing the finished surface.

Request photos of the approved layout, support before placement, seam underside, cutout details, and finished edges. Include normal-light close-ups of the seam and any waterfall joint. Ask which crew performed fabrication and which completed the install. A finished kitchen view alone leaves those responsibilities unresolved.

Keep installation workmanship separate from product coverage. Ask who reviews a chip, opens a product claim, or returns when a sink connection needs another trade. Record the contact and the agreed response process. Give the builder a completion record listing unresolved items rather than a general assurance that the room is done.

### Resolve site cutting before the template is released

Use the [countertop templating guide](/guides/countertop-templating/) to record accepted cabinets, fixture models, seam decisions, and authorization to fabricate. Ask which cuts belong in the shop and which remain on site. Put a changed sink or cooktop through the same approval record.

OSHA identifies cutting and grinding stone as activities that can generate respirable crystalline silica. [Silica overview](https://www.osha.gov/silica-crystalline) The OSHA/NIOSH countertop alert covers fabrication and on-site finishing or installation. [Countertop exposure guidance](https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/docs/2026-101/pdfs/2026-101.pdf)

Have the responsible contractor explain its task-specific exposure controls before accepting a field-cutting plan. Coordinate the work area, access, and adjacent crews through the GC. A templating or installation quote does not establish that every crew provides fabrication or exposure-control services.

## For countertop firms and installers

Introduce your service boundaries first. Tell the builder whether you supply material, template, fabricate, install, or coordinate the full package. Specify the products and installation details you can demonstrate. Show a seam or support detail from the same project as the finished top.

Before accepting a job, ask for cabinet readiness, final fixtures, access, and who approves the layout. Give the GC a written template-readiness list. Identify the conditions that require another visit. Price revisions through the authorized project contact before changing the fabrication plan.

Use your [portfolio](/guides/construction-portfolio/) to explain decisions. Include the approved material layout, progress photos, and the completed seam. Caption your role and material. Ask permission before sharing a client's kitchen, and keep addresses or order details out of public photos.

To retain builder relationships, send a useful handoff to plumbing and backsplash work. Identify any outstanding support or fit concern while access remains available. Agree completion and invoicing milestones before delivery. Offer a reference after the installation and agreed return work are accepted.

## Examples from the field

*Illustrative examples, not member stories*

### Kitchen template hold (illustrative)

Your cabinet run is installed, but the sink model is undecided. Record the missing selection and keep fabrication release with the authorized project contact.

### Supported island overhang (illustrative)

Your island layout includes an overhang and separate support work. Ask the fabricator to identify the product requirements and record who installs the agreed support.

### Replacement top on retained cabinets (illustrative)

You replace a countertop while keeping the cabinets. Assign removal, support review, utility disconnects, and reconnections before arranging the installation.

## Where Cercha fits

Portfolios and Gallery give countertop firms room to show seams, support stages, and finished work. Search helps builders identify members by trade and location. Use Messages to clarify whether a member supplies, fabricates, installs, or combines those scopes.

## Questions

### How soon after templating will countertop fabrication and installation be ready?

Request a job-specific written interval from accepted template to fabrication and installation. Confirm material availability and the approvals still needed.

### Must base cabinets be secured and leveled before the templating visit?

Have the cabinet installer and countertop firm agree readiness before the visit. Record support, fastening, alignment, and unresolved pieces.

### Will the fabricator use laser measurements or a physical countertop template?

Ask the templater which method it uses and what information it records. Confirm that the final approved layout and fixture models control fabrication.

### Where will countertop joints go, and how are patterns aligned?

Approve the marked seam and pattern layout before cutting. Request the material-specific seam requirements and identify who can authorize a change.

### Does the fabrication shop install with its own staff or outside crews?

Request the installation business name, crew contact, and warranty owner. Clarify whether a separate firm performs any stage of the package.
