# Building connections in the Triangle

The first Cercha market

Find the permit office, trade context, and material handoffs for your Triangle job. Ask about the app beta for your location.

## The Triangle beta opens first

If you build houses in the Triangle, you need people who can take the actual scope, reach the site, and discuss the next handoff. If you run a trade company or sell building materials, you need the builder who makes that decision. Cercha opens its app beta here first to bring those conversations closer to the work.

## Why the Triangle comes first

The founders chose the Triangle to connect builders putting up high-end homes, contractors looking for work, and suppliers introducing products for those homes. Each needs a relationship with the others. Starting in one market gives Cercha a defined place to develop those connections before opening another.

That is the founders' judgment about where to begin.

The permit data supports the presence of residential building activity, without proving that every home is high-end or that every trade needs more work. Census reports **4,738 new privately owned housing units authorized in Raleigh's permit jurisdiction in 2025** and **4,483 in Durham's**.

Both figures include their cross-county portions. [Census 2025 place data](https://www2.census.gov/econ/bps/Place/South%20Region/so2025a.txt).

The mix matters too. The same series records **1,512 units in Garner**, **1,363 in Wendell**, and **1,223 in Apex** for 2025. These are estimates with imputation, covering each permit-issuing jurisdiction. They count housing units authorized, not permit documents, starts, completions, open jobs, or Cercha members ([Census 2025 place data](https://www2.census.gov/econ/bps/Place/South%20Region/so2025a.txt)).

A large total cannot tell you whether a particular framing company is available.

For comparisons and definitions, use the [residential building permits resource](/research/residential-permits-by-metro/). Do not add municipal rows to county totals. Cross-county reporting also prevents those totals from becoming a precise count of housing physically inside an assumed service boundary.

## A local office comes before a local introduction

Use the parcel's jurisdiction to choose a permit office. A mailing city or ZIP code does not settle that decision. The city pages below distinguish the issuing office from the inspection provider. They also separate an application portal from a page explaining telephone inspection requests.

The county starting points are:

| County | Building office | Inspection route |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Wake | [Permits and Inspections](https://www.wake.gov/departments-government/permits-and-inspections) | County portal for county-served projects; check municipal responsibilities |
| Durham | [City-County Building & Safety](https://www.durhamnc.gov/295/Applications-Forms) | LDO inspection requests; Dplans handles building submissions |
| Orange | [Building Inspections](https://www.orangecountync.gov/3042/Building-Inspections) | County portal; [Hillsborough uses this office](https://web.archive.org/web/20260313131510/https://www.hillsboroughnc.gov/services/permits-and-licenses/zoning-compliance) |
| Chatham | [Central Permitting and Inspections](https://www.chathamcountync.gov/government/departments-programs-a-h/central-permitting-inspections) | [OpenGov requests through the permit record](https://web.archive.org/web/20260516173604/https://www.chathamcountync.gov/government/departments-programs-a-h/central-permitting-inspections/faqs) |
| Johnston | [Building Inspections](https://www.johnstonnc.gov/insp/content.cfm?pageid=113) | [Telephone scheduling instructions](https://www.johnstonnc.gov/insp/content.cfm?pageid=105) |
| Franklin | [Planning and Inspections](https://www.franklincountync.gov/260/Permits) | [OpenGov inspection guide](https://www.franklincountync.gov/DocumentCenter/View/434/Permit-Portal-Quick-Reference-Guide-PDF?bidId=) |
| Person | [Inspections Department](https://web.archive.org/web/20260711021233/https://www.personcountync.gov/government/departments-i-z/inspections) | [Main-desk telephone instructions](https://web.archive.org/web/20260521012948/https://www.personcountync.gov/government/departments-i-z/inspections/general-information/inspection-procedures) |

These are research starting points, not a declaration that every address in these counties has beta access. Raleigh, Cary, and other municipalities have their own processes. Knightdale issues town permits through Wake County's portal while county staff supply building inspections. [Knightdale permit instructions](https://www.knightdalenc.gov/development-services/permits-and-inspections/building-permits), [inspection instructions](https://www.knightdalenc.gov/development-services/permits-and-inspections/inspections).

## Use the local guide for the next decision

Keep the office directory and the work sequence separate. Start with the parcel's authority, then choose the task:

- For county-served work, read the [Wake County permit guide](/guides/wake-county-building-permits/), [Johnston County permit guide](/guides/johnston-county-building-permits/), or [Chatham County permit guide](/guides/chatham-county-building-permits/).
- For Durham submissions, use the [Durham building permit guide](/guides/durham-building-permits/). For inspection preparation, use [why residential inspections fail](/guides/why-residential-inspections-fail/).
- Keep environmental-health approvals separate with the [Wake County well and septic guide](/guides/wake-county-well-and-septic-permits/).
- Prepare a trade inquiry with [finding subcontractors around Raleigh](/guides/find-subcontractors-raleigh/) or [finding builder work in the Triangle](/guides/find-builder-work-triangle/).
- Compare sourcing questions in [Triangle building suppliers](/guides/triangle-building-suppliers/). Read [Triangle construction workforce](/guides/triangle-construction-workforce/) before treating statewide labor figures as a local crew count.

A ZIP code can cross county lines. [Census ZIP Code Tabulation Areas](https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/geography/guidance/geo-areas/zctas.html) describe generalized geography. They do not establish the permit authority or Cercha access for an address. Confirm the parcel's jurisdiction and ask about beta access separately.

## What each part of the building team gets

For a builder, start with the scope you need covered. Compare relevant finished work and ask who performed it. Give a prospective sub the site, drawing revision, prerequisites, and proposed dates. Confirm current license and insurance information directly before making a hiring decision.

For a trade company or crew, make your work understandable before the first conversation. Identify the scope your company performs, show comparable projects, and state your travel area. Ask the builder about readiness, material responsibility, and who approves additional work. A local introduction still needs clear terms.

For a supplier, connect the material to the person specifying or installing it. A window package needs an opening schedule; a lumber request needs a takeoff basis. Explain the brands you carry, then confirm the selected product, quantities, alternatives, and delivery arrangement directly. A profile does not establish stock or a delivery commitment.

For another route into local relationships, the [NCHBA chapter directory](https://www.nchba.org/membership/find-your-local-association/) lists Raleigh-Wake, Durham/Orange/Chatham, Johnston County, Franklin County, and Roxboro Person County associations. Each city guide identifies the relevant chapter context. These listings imply no Cercha partnership.

## Choose the guide for your job

Each guide provides its own office route, housing-data scope, planning context, and suggested trade handoffs:

- [Raleigh](/triangle/raleigh/), [Durham](/triangle/durham/), [Cary](/triangle/cary/), [Morrisville](/triangle/morrisville/).
- [Apex](/triangle/apex/), [Holly Springs](/triangle/holly-springs/), [Fuquay-Varina](/triangle/fuquay-varina/), [Garner](/triangle/garner/).
- [Wake Forest](/triangle/wake-forest/), [Rolesville](/triangle/rolesville/), [Knightdale](/triangle/knightdale/), [Wendell](/triangle/wendell/), [Zebulon](/triangle/zebulon/).
- [Clayton](/triangle/clayton/), [Smithfield](/triangle/smithfield/), [Louisburg](/triangle/louisburg/), [Roxboro](/triangle/roxboro/).
- [Chapel Hill](/triangle/chapel-hill/), [Carrboro](/triangle/carrboro/), [Hillsborough](/triangle/hillsborough/), [Mebane](/triangle/mebane/), [Pittsboro](/triangle/pittsboro/).

## How the next market opens

Cercha follows a market-by-market rollout: develop one service area, then open another. The Triangle comes first. If your business is elsewhere, [register your market through the beta inquiry](/beta/). You receive a waitlist response until Cercha opens your area; no opening date is promised here.

Your business location helps the team understand where interest comes from. It does not automatically establish access. Ask about your address and category, then use the [builder resources](/for/builders/) while the team confirms the appropriate next step.

## Where Cercha fits

Cercha Technologies is the technology company behind the app. Search by trade, ZIP code, and radius; review portfolios and builder or sub endorsements; use Messages to start a conversation. Supplier profiles can show carried brands. [Ask about the Triangle beta](/beta/) for your location, and confirm scope, capacity, and current credentials directly with the company.
