Countertop templating: what has to be ready

Book the template when the installed cabinet layout and required fixtures are ready. Put a decision-maker on site and control every change afterward.

You need the kitchen ready for countertop templating so the fabricator can measure and get approval to cut. Get the installed cabinet layout, required fixtures, appliance information, and authorized decisions ready first. Cambria’s installation FAQ requires permanently installed cabinets in the same plane for an accurate final measure.

Settle the selections and cabinet positions before the appointment. The fabricator needs installed cabinets and final choices, not a kitchen rendering the trades are still changing.

Confirm readiness with the fabricator before booking

Ask the company that will perform the measure for its current readiness checklist. Name the countertop material. Confirm whether the visit is for a preliminary measure or a final fabrication template. Ask what conditions would make the visit incomplete.

For Cambria projects, the manufacturer’s installation checklist calls for installed support structures and plumbing fixtures on site. It also requests appliance model numbers when appliances cannot be present, plus an on-site decision-maker. Confirm what your fabricator needs before declaring the kitchen ready.

Do not send “cabinets are in” as the complete readiness message. State which rooms and runs are complete, which support decisions remain, and whether the selected fixtures are available. Send photos showing the installed cabinets and unfinished work.

Use freeze the cabinet layout before this appointment. Electrical and countertop crews need the same installed plan.

Walk the cabinet installation first

Review the cabinet installer’s completion record with the fabricator’s requirements. KraftMaid’s installation guide addresses wall and floor irregularities, shimming, and cabinet alignment. Use the instructions for the selected cabinets when deciding what “ready” means.

Ask the cabinet installer what could still change the dimensions. Include missing boxes, planned fillers, end panels, sink supports, appliance openings, and revised island locations in the discussion. Resolve each item or obtain the templater’s written acceptance of the condition.

Agree the support details separately. Cambria’s technical guideline addresses support without deflection, cutouts, overhangs, and supported field seams. Those requirements apply to Cambria.

Have the fabricator specify supports for the selected material. Do not borrow bracket spacing from another product.

Record who supplies, installs, and checks each support. Ask whether it must be installed before measurement or before placement. Leave no support item assigned only to “others.”

Bring the choices that control fabrication

Use one selection sheet for the appointment. Label each item final, open, or accepted for later confirmation. Mark the final choices instead of leaving the templater to sort through an email chain.

Scroll to read all columns.

Item Decision to establish Person to confirm
Surface material Product, design, thickness, finish Buyer and fabricator
Edge and exposed ends Profile and finished boundaries Authorized decision-maker
Sink Exact unit, mounting, position Builder, plumber, fabricator
Faucet and accessories Models and hole arrangement Buyer, plumber, fabricator
Cooking appliances Model and installation documentation Builder and appliance installer
Seams and pattern Proposed layout and approval process Buyer and fabricator
Backsplash Included scope and interface Builder and tile or countertop installer
Overhangs and supports Design and installation ownership Fabricator and responsible designer

Use the table to gather decisions, then add anything else your kitchen needs. Get material specifications from the fabricator.

84 Lumber’s kitchen quote process provides an example of coordinating kitchen plans and selections through the supplier. Keep supplier design information aligned with the approved field layout. Ask the person who released the cabinet order to attend unresolved layout decisions. Confirm the countertop supplier’s material and fabrication scope against that same field layout.

Put a decision-maker at the appointment

Cambria’s checklist explicitly asks for a person authorized to verify selections. Measure appointment requirements. Identify that person by name when confirming access.

Give that person the approved scope. State which choices they may settle and which require the buyer or designer. If no authorized person can attend, resolve the approval process with the fabricator before the visit.

Have the builder or superintendent walk the kitchen with the templater when they arrive. Point out open issues before measuring begins. End the visit by reading back the decisions and exceptions.

Record the appointment date, drawing revision, selections checked, and outstanding approvals. Ask whether fabrication is released or still held. A completed template does not authorize cutting until the required approvals are in.

Control what happens after templating

Agree the fabrication release process with the fabricator. Request the documents that need approval, the person who signs, and the conditions for holding the order. Confirm scheduling directly rather than assuming a standard turnaround.

For material-specific technical questions, use the manufacturer’s documentation. Cosentino’s technical library separates resources by its surface products. Use the instructions for the selected product’s supports, seams, and fabrication.

After templating, put this note on the cabinet plan: contact the builder and fabricator before changing anything that was measured. Send it to the cabinet, appliance, plumbing, and electrical leads.

If a change arrives, record it before work proceeds:

  1. Identify the original selection or measured condition.
  2. Describe the proposed replacement or relocation.
  3. Ask the fabricator whether the existing template remains usable.
  4. Obtain the required approval, revised price, and schedule.
  5. Distribute the revised drawing and withdraw the earlier release.

Identify re-template triggers early

Ask your fabricator which changes require another site visit. Ask about moved cabinet runs or islands, replacement sinks, altered appliance openings, revised supports, and wall changes where the top was measured.

If the fabricator accepts a change without another measure, keep that decision with the revised fabrication documents. Record what changed and who reviewed it.

Before installation, confirm access, existing-top removal where applicable, fixture availability, and the trade return plan. Cambria distinguishes removal responsibilities and asks that built-in fit responsibilities be documented in the purchase agreement. Installation FAQ.

Coordinate the cabinet and flooring sequence before locking finished heights. Use the countertop trade page when defining the installed package beyond measurement.

Separate selection approval from field acceptance

Record each approval separately. The buyer can approve a surface design while the fabricator still holds support acceptance. The builder can confirm the cabinet layout while a sink selection remains open. State what each signature approves.

At the end of the visit, read the open items aloud with the decision-maker. Name the person resolving each item and the document that will record the answer. Ask the fabricator to identify precisely what prevents fabrication release.

Send the resulting record to the affected trade leads. Keep the approved drawing and selections together. Update the whole package when a later email changes a selection.
