Licensing research

Contractor licensing by state

A state-by-state starting point for checking residential contractor credentials, with a separate electrical, plumbing, and HVAC table. Unverified fields stay blank.

Check contractor licensing by state before scheduling

Find the work jurisdiction, then compare the proposed scope with the authority’s credential rules. This table records residential general-contracting routes for all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Each row gives official sources, a retrieval date, and unresolved questions.

New homes, alterations, supervision, and repairs can follow different rules. A GC classification does not establish permission to perform every regulated trade. Check electrical, plumbing, and HVAC work with the responsible trade board separately.

Read the basis and operator beside each dollar threshold. Project cost, contract value, and annual receipts measure different things. A greater-than condition excludes the boundary itself; a greater-than-or-equal-to condition includes it. Registration amounts have separate columns.

The recorded project-cost subset has a median of $4,500 across 14 jurisdictions. That statistic describes this dataset, including its recorded conditions. It cannot set a national minimum job size requiring a license. Scope, permit, and other triggers can apply below a dollar amount.

Six general-contracting classifications remain unresolved. A blank means the research did not establish the answer. Use verify a contractor license to check the current entity, status, classification, and scope with the issuing authority. Ask the board or a construction attorney about your project.

Key findings from the recorded data

If you are comparing markets, read residential permits by metro separately. A permit total does not establish a contractor’s credentials.

How to use the tables

Find the jurisdiction and read the requirement, credential type, work scope, threshold basis, comparison operator, and notes together. Check the separate registration columns. Use include_in_threshold_summary=true to reproduce the 14-row statistic. Annual-receipts and registration amounts are excluded from that subset.

For electrical, plumbing, and HVAC work, ask the responsible trade board about the proposed scope and jurisdiction. This page’s displayed table covers general contracting.

Open the row’s official sources before relying on a requirement. A public lookup link identifies a verification resource. It does not establish that any named contractor holds a current credential.

Method and caveats

The research inspected state boards, agencies, legislative text, government guidance, and local evidence for local rules on October 14, 2026. It distinguishes licenses, registrations, certifications, and tax credentials. Dollar amounts retain their operators and cost bases. Source conflicts and unresolved routes stay in the notes.

The threshold statistic selects the 14 rows marked for inclusion, sorts their amounts, and averages the seventh and eighth values. It excludes annual receipts, registration amounts, class ceilings, bonds, and missing values.

Blank cells must remain unknown or inapplicable as explained by the row. Local permits, owner-builder exceptions, reciprocity, and every credential class are not resolved here. Refresh official sources before applying a legal requirement.

Where Cercha fits

Cercha helps builders and trades find each other through trade and location search, portfolios, endorsements, and messaging. Use a profile to begin a conversation about the work and credentials. Verify credentials directly with the issuing authority. This research does not establish Cercha’s badge-verification method. For the Raleigh-Durham Triangle beta, ask about the beta.

Column definitions

State
Full jurisdiction name. District of Columbia is included once.
License required for residential general contracting
`yes`: a state credential applies within the stated residential scope. `threshold`: applicability depends on a sourced dollar condition. `no`: no general competency license for the stated route, often with mandatory registration instead. `local only`: the sourced framework assigns general licensing to local authorities. Empty: classification unresolved.
Dollar threshold usd (USD)
Numeric dollar boundary for a license condition. No dollar signs or separators. This is not necessarily a universal licensing floor.
Threshold operator
Source-supported comparison: `>` or `>=`. Source conflicts appear in notes rather than in the operator value.
Threshold basis
What the amount measures: project cost, contract value, annual residential receipts, or restricted repair work.
Issuing body
Responsible state program or local authority for the stated route. Empty when the responsible state issuer was not established.
License classes for residential work
Classes identified from the sources. A list can be partial; notes disclose scope limits.
Exam required
Sourced examination condition. Includes qualifying-party and waiver distinctions. Empty does not mean no exam.
Bond or insurance required by board
Sourced board or program condition. Amounts retain their class, volume, and coverage basis. This does not describe every insurance obligation.
Online lookup url
Public verification tool, or an official landing page linking to one. Registration lookups verify registration only.
Statute or rule citation
Citation explicitly established from inspected source text. Empty when not established.
Source url
Primary sources supporting populated values, or inspected official material for unresolved rows. Split multiple URLs on `|`.
Retrieved date
Inspection date in `YYYY.MM.DD` form. Source publication dates may be older.
Notes
Scope, exemptions, conflicts, source limitations, and unfilled fields.
Credential type
Distinguishes licenses, registrations, local requirements, tax licensing, and permit-related certification.
Registration threshold usd (USD)
Sourced registration boundary, kept out of the license-threshold column. Empty is not zero.
Registration threshold basis
Registration cost/receipts basis.
Include in threshold summary
`true` for the recorded project-cost dollar boundary subset; `false` for annual-receipts conditions, missing boundaries, and non-license amounts.
Registration threshold operator
Separate `>` or `>=` registration comparison; empty without a numeric registration boundary.
Evidence access
Source access: direct_text means directly inspected text; indexed_extract means direct reading was not established; mixed combines both. Not a current-law certification.
