You need a box count for a room, a hallway, or several spaces using the same flooring. Add each rectangle, enter your waste percentage, and copy the square-foot coverage from the carton. The calculator totals the area, applies waste once, and rounds the final box count upward.
Break the floor into rectangles
Enter length and width in feet. Use Add rectangle for each additional region, including a closet or an alcove that belongs in this takeoff. Keep the regions separate on your sketch so you do not count an overlap twice. Remove a row when that region belongs to another product.
The area formula is length times width. The SMARTCORE Tile project planner uses that formula, then adds waste and divides by the coverage per carton. This tool extends that arithmetic across all the rectangles you enter for one product.
Choose waste and coverage for this job
Enter the allowance you intend to use for the layout and selected product. Zero means the calculator adds no waste. The tool does not choose an allowance from the room shape or installation pattern. Review your product instructions and takeoff with the flooring sub before ordering.
Copy the coverage from the actual box rather than carrying a value from a previous job. The SMARTCORE planner illustrates its calculation with a particular carton coverage and allowance. Those example values do not determine the inputs for your flooring.
If two rooms use different products or carton coverage, run them separately. The box count here assumes every box covers the same area and serves the same product group.
Check the whole-box result
For a ten-by-twelve-foot example, the net area is 120 square feet. With a ten-percent allowance, the calculation reaches 132 square feet. If each box covers twenty square feet, the quotient is 6.6, so the result is seven whole boxes covering 140 square feet.
The tool preserves the unrounded area through that final ceiling. Displayed decimals do not reduce the order count. This is an area estimate, so keep cut layout, pattern direction, transitions, and separate trim quantities in your takeoff. Save the measured areas, allowance, and carton label beside the result so another person can check the inputs.
Check the inputs and results
Scroll to read all columns.
| Planned input | Unit or rule |
|---|---|
| Each nonoverlapping rectangle | Positive length and width in feet |
| Waste | Nonnegative percent selected for the product and layout |
| Box coverage | Positive square feet per box |
| Intended result | Sum rectangle areas, apply allowance once, divide by coverage, round upward once to whole boxes |
Use positive dimensions and the selected carton’s coverage. Keep rectangles from overlapping. The final box count rounds upward after all included areas and the allowance are combined.
Before you order flooring
Keep square feet and box coverage in the same unit, using NIST’s area references when checking conversions. Run separate product groups before rounding cartons.
Review the cabinet and flooring sequence with the flooring sub. Flooret’s cabinet guidance distinguishes installation methods; apply your selected product’s instructions.
Review moisture conditions through the NWFA problem-prevention guidance when the package is wood flooring. A box count does not establish substrate readiness.
Confirm coverage and receiving arrangements with the flooring supplier. Builders FirstSource’s delivery example shows one supplier’s records. Check required approvals with the local inspection office separately.

Where Cercha fits
Use the Cercha app’s Search filters to find the trade for the flooring scope. Review portfolio photos on the profile and use Messages to discuss the rooms, product, and installation plan. The website calculator supplies a quantity check for that conversation.
